Strolling around the Christmas market in Frankfurt with my friend Yuliya,
beautiful inside & out,
before seeing Bizet’s Carmen at the “Oper Frankfurt”
(The video and pics of the opera from the posts of “Oper Frankfurt” on FB)
The staging was too modern, the scenery too minimalistic (just a huge staircase), the costumes as if randomly thrown together to my taste; but at the end they treated us to an opulent visual feast: the toreador Escamillo clad in gold and Carmen in a black flamenco dress, descending the staircase, a huge ruffled train covering the steps (revealing the purpose of the staircase :).

Sorry you weren’t so happy with Carmen at Oper Frankfurt. I love that production, especially her gorilla costume, but I haven’t been back to see it this year (yet) because of covid.

I guess it’s just due to my growing up with the old-fashioned theatrical tradition: opulent scenery, period costumes, conservative staging 🙂 I have to confess I was a tiny bit shocked by her “King Kong”-attire 🙂

The great thing about Carmen is that it can be staged in so many different ways. https://operasandcycling.com/tag/bizet/

Thank You so much for sharing with me Your enchanting write-ups on different perfomances of Bizet’s “Carmen”. Looks like You’ve seen quite a few of them. I’ve recently listened into that one on Youtube and quite liked it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTDMvyj4TFg

Glad you liked my Carmen write-ups. And thanks for the link. I once saw Carmen at the Bastille Opera in Paris, but it was an entirely different production.
